That's the problem. A total only means something when you know what's inside it. Put quotes with different contents side by side and you're comparing different jobs, not different prices.
You don't need to become a builder. You need one list, the same for every quote, and a simple way to mark what's on it.

Sit down with your quotes, a pen and a calculator. In roughly 1-2 hours you'll have:
- One line list of all the work for your project, instead of each builder's own layout.
- A side-by-side view of up to four quotes (Quote A, B, C and D).
- A rough comparable total for each quote: the price on the quote, plus your rough guess for what's missing.
- A list of questions for each builder, ready to send by email or text so you get answers in writing.
- A filled-in scorecard with weights you can change, so price is only one part of the decision.

- Scorecard (best possible score: 500): score each quote 1 to 5 on seven things, like nothing missing, clear price, timeline, payment plan, and how extra costs are handled. Change the weights to suit you, and add up to three rows of your own. Filled-in example included.

Questions
I already have three quotes. Why do I need this?
Because quotes in different layouts can cover different work. The workbook puts every quote on the same list, so a low total that leaves things out doesn't look better than it is.
How many quotes can I compare?
Up to four at once. If you have more, pick your top four first, or do a second round.
I only have one quote so far.
Start anyway. Do Steps 1 and 2 (your master list) now, and finish the rest when the other quotes arrive.
What's an "allowance"?
A set amount of money the builder writes into the quote for something you'll pick later, like $2,000 for tile. If the tile you want costs more, you pay the difference. The workbook helps you spot allowances and check them against what you've actually chosen.
How long does it take?
Roughly 1-2 hours with your quotes in hand. Allow extra time for more than one room, and for waiting on builders to answer your questions.
Does it work for kitchens and bathrooms?
Yes. The prompts cover both, including things like countertops, faucets, and waterproofing (sealing wet areas so water doesn't get into walls and floors). You add or cross out lines to fit your job.
Can't I just use a spreadsheet or ask a chatbot?
You can. This saves you building it yourself: the list prompts, codes, comparable total, question tracker and scorecard are already laid out, with filled-in examples, and you can print it and take it to meetings.
Will this save me money?
